    Methodology

Each calculator uses the inputs on the page and standard commercial formulas. Change the inputs to match a written offer rather than an advertised headline rate.

    • Apply For Financing does not lend and does not use these results to make a credit decision.
    • Partner offers can include fees, residuals or remittance structures that a simple model misses.

When a tool accepts a fee input, the fee is added to cash cost and is not silently folded into the interest rate. Formula reviewed 2026-08-28.

    Frequently Asked Questions

An amortization schedule is a complete table showing every payment over the life of a loan. Each row breaks down how much of each payment goes toward principal (paying down the balance) versus interest. Early payments are mostly interest, while later payments are mostly principal.

Interest is calculated on the remaining balance. Since the balance is highest at the start, the interest portion of each payment is also highest. As you pay down the principal over time, less interest accrues and more of each payment goes toward the balance.

Early-payment rules vary. Some agreements permit additional payments, while others charge a fee or calculate the payoff differently. Check the written agreement and request a payoff statement before making a decision.

Use these guides to understand the assumptions and financing choices behind the numbers.
