He left finance to launch a drone company. Discover why.

Jacob Stonecipher, a 30-year-old entrepreneur, made the bold decision to leave his lucrative career in financial research to pursue his passion for drone technology and aerial advertising. Inspired by the outdated methods of traditional banner towing he observed during a beach trip, he founded Sustainable Skylines, a company that revolutionizes the way businesses advertise using drones. This journey has not only challenged him but has also proven to be incredibly fulfilling. In this text, we will explore Jacob’s inspiring transition from corporate life to entrepreneurship and how he is reshaping the aerial advertising landscape.
From Financial Researcher to Drone Innovator
In the summer of 2016, Jacob was just 21 years old and working as an intern at a private-capital research firm in New York City. During a weekend outing to the Jersey shore, he was struck by the sight of noisy airplanes towing large banners overhead—an experience that felt archaic. With these thoughts lingering after returning to New York City, Jacob became captivated by the idea of modernizing aerial advertising through drones.
After graduating college a year later, Jacob secured a position at the same private-equity research firm where he had interned. He quickly ascended the ranks within business development and enjoyed significant financial rewards; however, his mind often wandered back to his drone aspirations. His evenings were dedicated to researching whether drones could effectively tow large banners.
This led him on an extensive journey of contacting drone manufacturers while sending out sample 800-foot banners for testing purposes. Unfortunately, every manufacturer returned them with feedback indicating that achieving his vision would require entirely new software and hardware solutions.
The Challenge of Regulatory Approval
Realizing that he would need to develop a custom drone from scratch prompted Jacob to reach out to the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) for guidance on obtaining approvals for this innovative concept. Despite several months passing without any response from them, he decided not to wait idly. Instead, he hired three engineers in Maryland after networking through LinkedIn and making numerous cold calls. With combined funding from his savings, as well as support from family and friends amounting to about $150,000, he ventured into building a prototype.
Eventually, someone from the FAA contacted him for a discussion about aerial advertising safety concerns—a major issue within traditional methods—and expressed interest in how Jacob’s drone could enhance safety in this sector. By this time, he had developed a working prototype capable of lifting substantial banners for short flights enough to demonstrate its feasibility during an online presentation with FAA officials.
Taking the Leap of Faith
Following encouraging feedback from regulatory bodies in early 2021 and gaining approval for further development projects fueled Jacob’s ambition further. He officially launched Sustainable Skylines and raised $1 million from angel investors alongside family contributions.
A pivotal moment came when Jacob decided it was time to quit his secure position as senior director at his former employer; all-consuming thoughts about creating drones kept him awake at night. It felt unfair not only toward himself but also toward his employer as well because his heart was no longer invested there—this leap into entrepreneurship was filled with uncertainty but also immense excitement.
The Move That Changed Everything
In pursuit of better opportunities for testing aerial advertisements year-round due to favorable weather conditions and expansive spaces available in Miami—recognized as an epicenter for banner towing—Jacob relocated there in 2022 with hopes of accelerating growth at Sustainable Skylines.
From day one upon launching operations on Miami Beach—the team began donating ad inventory while learning how best they could operate their drones effectively within this new framework. Within just over one year since inception during Thanksgiving celebrations earlier last year came another milestone: achieving FAA approval for commercial operations involving their unique drone setup! The excitement culminated when they successfully launched their first paid campaign featuring sunglasses ads across 10 miles along Miami Beach during spring break season!
A Bright Future Ahead
Sustainable Skylines continues expanding its reach through enhanced production capabilities aimed specifically at scaling aircraft deployment efficiently across various applications beyond mere marketing purposes alone—for instance utilizing technology developed here into other sectors such as delivery or surveillance operations going forward!
Funding Growth Initiatives
To date, they’ve managed raising approximately $2.8 million through seed funding rounds while preparing plans aimed toward institutional fundraising efforts shortly thereafter too! Notably added new team members including one who served seven years within U.S Army Special Operations now heading up government solutions roles alongside bringing aboard seasoned professionals like chief marketing officers into fold allowing collaborative synergy between different disciplines fostering innovation throughout entire organization structure seamlessly!
The Journey Has Just Begun
This entrepreneurial venture has proven far more challenging than initially anticipated yet remains undeniably rewarding overall! Building something meaningful carries its weighty burdens but ultimately creates immense satisfaction derived simply witnessing ideas transform into reality right before your eyes! As we move forward together embracing challenges ahead remember: our dreams are worth fighting fiercely towards achieving them no matter what obstacles may arise along way!
